Hat Description

Whirly Rib is a beret that features 7 stocking stitch panels worked on the bias, which are separated by columns of eyelets. The shaping is incorporated into the panels which narrow towards the crown. The Hat has a rolled stocking stitch brim.

Abbreviations

K: knit
P: purl
rpt: repeat
R/rnd(s): rounds
st(s): stitch(es)
M1: pick up the horizontal loop before the next stitch, place it onto the left needle & knit into the front of it
yo: wrap yarn round needle to create a yarnover
k2tog: knit next 2 sts together

How To

Cast on 80 [89, 98] sts. Join in the round, being careful not to twist stitches. Place marker to indicate start of round.

 

Brim

Now work for the brim by knitting every round for 1.75 [2, 2.25] in/4.5 [5, 5.5] cm (or desired length) then work increase round once as follows:

Inc Rnd: K2 [1, 0], *K2, M1; rpt from * to end [119, 133, 147 sts]

 

Body

Next Rnd: *K3, [yo, k2tog] (7, 8, 9) times; rpt from * to end (7 repeats in total)

This round forms the pattern for the main body.

Work in pattern until the main body of the Hat (excluding the brim) measures approx. 3.75 [4, 4.25] in/9.5 [10, 10.75] cm

18in size jump to Rnd 5, 20in size jump to Rnd 3, 22in size start at Rnd 1

Rnd 1: *K3, k2tog, [yo, k2tog] 8 times; rpt from * to end [140 sts]

Rnd 2: *K2, k2tog, [yo, k2tog] 8 times; rpt from * to end [133 sts]

Rnd 3: *K3, k2tog, [yo, k2tog] 7 times; rpt from * to end [126 sts]

Rnd 4: *K2, k2tog, [yo, k2tog] 7 times; rpt from * to end [119 sts]

Rnd 5: *K3, k2tog, [yo, k2tog] 6 times; rpt from * to end [112 sts]

Rnd 6: *K2, k2tog, [yo, k2tog] 6 times; rpt from * to end [105 sts]

Rnd 7: *K3, k2tog, [yo, k2tog] 5 times; rpt from * to end [98 sts]

Break yarn and thread through remaining 7 sts and tighten to close.

 

Finishing

Weave in all ends. Gently wash and dry flat, avoid over stretching the brim.
