Hat Description
Houndale is a comfort fit Hat with a ribbed brim and garter stitch body. The garter stitch is punctuated by 4 equidistant columns of single knit stitches. The columns work into the crown where the shaping is incorporated into the pattern.

14 sts x 20 rows to 4in/10cm on 6.5mm needles over Twisted Rib
12 sts x 24 rows to 4in/10cm on 8mm needles over Garter St.

Finished size: 13.75 [16, 18.25, 20.5] in/35 [40.5, 46.25, 52] cm

Abbreviations
K: knit
K1tbl: knit stitch through the back of loop
P: purl
S1tbl: slip stitch knitwise through the back of the loop.
rpt: repeat
R/rnd(s): rounds
st(s): stitch(es)
k2tog: knit next 2 sts together
SSK: slip next 2 sts knitwise, then knit these 2 sts together through the backs of the loops
How To
Using 6.5mm needles and Alternate Cable cast-on method, cast on 48 [56, 64, 72] sts.
Join in the round, being careful not to twist sts. Place stitch marker to indicate start of round.
Brim
Now work K1tbl, P1 rib for 1 [1, 1.25, 1.25] in/2.5 [2.5, 3.25, 3.25] cm.
Body
Change to 8mm needles then proceed as follows:
Rnd 1: *K1tbl, P 11 [13, 15, 17]; rpt from * to end
Rnd 2: *S1tbl, K 11 [13, 15, 17]; rpt from * to end
Repeat these 2 rounds until work measures 6 [7, 8, 9] in/15.25 [17.75, 20.25, 22.75] cm including the Brim, ending after Rnd 1.
Crown
Rnd 1: *S1tbl, K1, [k2tog, ssk] 2 [3, 3, 4] times, k2tog 1 [0, 1, 0] times; rpt from * to end [28, 32, 36, 40 sts]
Rnd 2: *K1tbl, P 6 [7, 8, 9]; rpt from * to end
Rnd 3: *S1tbl, K 0 [1, 0, 1], [k2tog, ssk] 1 [1, 2, 2] times, k2tog 1 [1, 0, 0] times; rpt from * to end [16, 20, 20, 24 sts]
Rnd 4: *K1tbl, P 3 [4, 4, 5]; rpt from * to end
Rnd 5: *S1tbl, K 1 [0, 0, 1], [k2tog] 1 [2, 2, 2] times, rpt from * to end [12, 12, 12, 16 sts]
Break yarn and draw through remaining 12 [12, 12, 16] sts, tighten to close.
Finishing
Weave in all ends and block as required.
