Hat Description
The Garter Slouch is a simple garter stitch slouch Hat. It’s a roomy Hat featuring a ribbed brim and a gathered crown.

M1P: lift the horizontal loop between next 2 sts, place it onto the left needle & purl into the back of it
How To
Using 4mm needles and Alternate Cable cast-on method, cast on 64 [72, 80, 88, 96, 104] sts.
Join in the round, taking care not to twist the stitches. Place stitch marker to indicate start of round.
Brim
Brim Rnd: *K1tbl, P1; rpt from * to end
Repeat this round until work measures approx. 1.25 [1.25, 1.5, 1.5, 1.75, 1.75] in/3.25 [3.25, 3.75, 3.75, 4.5, 4.5] cm from the cast on edge. Change to larger needles.
Inc Rnd: *P4, M1P; rpt from * to end [80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 130 sts]
Body
Rnd 1: Knit all stitches
Rnd 2: Purl all stitches
Repeat these 2 rounds until work measures approx. 4 [5, 6, 7, 8, 9] in/10 [12.75, 15.25, 17.75, 20.25, 22.75] cm excluding the brim, ending after a Rnd 1.
Crown
Using either the Gathered Bind-off or the Modified Gathered Bind-off, transfer all stitches from the needle to yarn and gather to close.
Finishing
Weave in all ends and block as required.

how would you decrease the slouchy garter – I find rapid decrease in garter comes out puckery
I was thinking of decreasing 8 stitches per round over roughly 22 rows or 2.5″
Hi there,
This one is designed to have rapid crown shaping, without decreasees, as shown in the last photo, and so it will pucker a little until blocked.
If you want a smoother crown with less rapid decreasing, then I’ve a few other posts that might be helpful. Do keep in mind that the depth of the body will need to be shorter before starting the crown, as the crown will be longer if you use a different, slower decrease formula.
You can use the ‘Regular Beanie Finish’ from this pattern, only switch the plain rounds to purl, whilst decreasing on the knit rounds:

thank you for your response – when would you do a plain round after a final decrease round and what would be the purpose of doing so? Is to soften the finish after a rapid decrease?
I would work plain rounds between decrease rounds on a bottom-up Hat to soften the decrease lines, yes, although that depends on the stitch pattern! But for simple stitches like garter, stocking stitch and moss stitch, having a plain round between helps smooth the crown more.
However, having a plain round after the final decrease round isn’t something I’d recommend on a pattern with a smoother decrease formula as it causes the centre to stick out – definitely don’t do a plain round after the final decrease round on a Hat like that.
On a bottom-up Hat with rapid decreasing, it would depend, but it can help with reducing the puckering and making the gather sit more nicely. But it really does depend on the stitch pattern, bulk and type of yarn etc.
Is it a 5 mm for the body or 4? Your gauge in both rib and garter are both written 4 mm
In the pattern it says to start with 4mm, then change to larger needles after the brim for the body 🙂
