This Hat is named for Circe, an enchantress from Greek legend who transformed all who came to her island. The wide panels of Circe narrow as the colourwork stretches towards its crown, creating the illusion of change and transformation.
Each Hat in the Imperceptions collection is knitted bottom-up and in the round. The ideal yarn for these Hats is 4-ply or light sportweight, in a multi-plied fibre with some natural give, such as merino. The illusions look their best in two high-contrast colours.
This pattern is available individually, or as part of the Imperceptions collection eBook.
Circe is a slouchy stranded colourwork Hat worked from the bottom up in two colours. The colours are equally weighted in the pattern, using single stitch and single row patterning. Circe starts with a corrugated rib brim that’s finished with a lateral braid. The colourwork on the body is angular, with concentric rectangles that repeat vertically and horizontally. Each row of concentric rectangles is offset by 50% from the row before, creating an optical illusion effect of square diamonds. The nature of the crown decreases results in ever decreasing trapezoids that meet at the centre.
