Squarina – knitting pattern

Drawing on Luciano Vistosi’s sculptural glasswork, Squarina takes cues from Sole, translating its radiating forms and graphic geometry into stranded colourwork. Repeated slanted squares create a sense of expansion and movement around the Hat, combining Italian modernist geometry with the tactile quality of knitted fabric.

Each Hat in the Iterations collection is knitted bottom-up and in the round. The ideal yarn for these Hats is 4-ply or light sportweight, in a multi-plied fibre with some natural give, such as merino.

Hat Description

Squarina is a stranded colourwork Hat worked from the bottom up in two colours. The colours are equally weighted in the pattern, using two-stitch and two-row patterning. The Hat starts with a corrugated rib brim that’s finished with a lateral braid. The body pattern features a nested square pattern, which alternates and repeats vertically all the way around, creating a striking graphic effect. The crown features the pattern converging towards the centre.

4ply/Sock weight or sport weight, plied yarn; high contrast solid, semi-solid or variegated yarns.

Circular needle, 2 sizes smaller
2.75mm [3mm] crochet hook
Stitch markers as necessary
