All of the free patterns and tutorials on this website are supported by my amazing Patreons! If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be able to continue to produce or host freebies. You can also say thanks for the freebie via the Tip Jar.

Hat Description

Bridget is a square top Hat with wide vertical ribs around the entire beanie. The brim is worked in pattern and is folded up, so that the ribs on the brim alternate with the ribs on the body of the Hat. There is a large pompom added to each corner of the crown.

Pattern Availability

My Patreon supporters and members of The Woolly Hat Society get exclusive early access to new free patterns and tutorials. Once the exclusive period is over, they’re published here on the blog for everyone to use.

Blocking a Hand Knit Hat

Abbreviations

K: knit
P: purl
rpt: repeat
R/rnd(s): rounds
st(s): stitch(es)

How To

The two yarns are held together throughout. Alternatively, a single yarn that provides the same gauge can be used.

Cast on 60 [70, 80] sts

Join in the round, being careful not to twist stitches. Place stitch marker to indicate start of round.

Body

Rnd 1: *K5, P5; repeat from * to end

This round forms the pattern for the body. Work in pattern until the Hat measures approximately 8 [8.5, 9] in/20 [21.5, 23] cm (or desired length).

Crown

Divide stitches evenly in half and perform either a 3-needle bind off, kitchener stitch or a crochet bind off. Alternatively, cast off and seam along top.

Pompoms

The pompoms in the photo shown were made on a 3” diameter template.

Try to avoid over filling the pompom, as this would make them very heavy and likely to drag the top of the Hat down, or worse still, break off.

Instead of pompoms you could add tassels, I-cords, buttons, bells or any other kind of decoration!

Finishing

Weave in all ends and block as required.
